Last week the BBC weather forecast was predicting strong winds for this weekend – yesterday there was a breeze when we put the tents up. By the time we went to bed it was absolutely still. The same this morning my tent is not moving at all – no wind. It made it very easy to make my early morning tea. Unlike last year.

First thing at Woodhall Spa – I had early morning coffee at this camp instead of tea
Weight 750g
Lunch
Tinned Mackerel in Teriyaki sauce
Crackers
Cereal bar
Tea
Arrival at Woodhall Spa Camping and Caravan Club site
Milicano coffee stick and cakes (the warden gave me some milk as they had sold out of 1 pints – otherwise I would have bought some)
Dinner
Sesame flavoured Japanese noodles
I let the noodles cool down then I added a small packet of mixed pitted olives in herb oil and a salad dressing sachet that Mum had left over from her dinner on Friday
Chinese sesame dessert
Peach tea (cold)
Milicano coffee
Tea
Early morning
Tea and breakfast biscuits
Breakfast
Apple Pop Tarts
Dried fruit
Fresh coffee and more tea
Elevenses
Nescafe 2 in 1 coffee
Nutrigrain breakfast bar
Extras
2x decaf coffee sticks
Nutrigrain bar
Hot chocolate drink
I also had my Backpacking Brew Kit, packet of glucose tablet and some SiS Go Hydro tablets.

lunch in the pouring rain – getting a little shelter under the trees
I got this from a local Asian supermarket – there is no other way to describe it, it is black custard. It is very sweet and tastes strongly of sesame. I like it as an alternative to instant custard.
It was a warm humid weekend so I carried 2.5l of water and used nearly all of it. I carried a pack of SiS Go Hydro tablets, which I made up in my 500ml bottle, which I refilled as required from one of my other bottle – I had three bottles of the electrolyte drink. I made tea at lunch and drank nearly all the rest of the water – and it was probably just enough for the conditions.
Once I was at the camp site I was aware how much fluid I had lost during the day so I made sure I had plenty to drink – stoping to make a drink before I even put my tent up.
I walked until about 1pm on Sunday I carried 1.5l of water. I used one of my electrolyte drinks, made hot chocolate whilst I waited for Diana to arrive and drank most of the rest.

Read about my water choices here.
This is the first full weekend away using this “retired” mobile phone as an MP3 player to replace my iPod Nano. It worked really well. I listened to an audio book all day Saturday and Sunday morning whilst I was walking and at the campsite I read for an estimated four to five hours. The 2.5Ah battery gave out about 20 minutes before Diana picked me up on Sunday, so it lasted the weekend. I had the original 1.2Ah battery with me so I swapped them and carried on reading. If I am away for any longer I will need to take my 20Ah Power Pack with me to charge the HTC. (Read my Backpacking Geek.)
I still used my iphone for my photos, photo editing, blogging, navigation etc, but not using it to read my books on meant that I only used one of my 2Ah emergency iphone batteries. I have used both of them on previous weekend trips.

I am going camping next weekend, probably to the Peak District. The plan is to get a cooked breakfast on the way, spend the day walking and taking photographs then onto a campsite for the night. I am not backpacking with this food, it is a car based trip.

As I am away next week on business I am sorting the gear and camping food this weekend. Packed in the bag above is the evening meal, breakfast and the extras! Not shown in the photo is trail food for the Saturday and some apples.
Trail Food

I am going the add a banana or apple to this – and I am planning to get my Alpkit Kraku stove out along the way to make the 2-in-1 coffee. Hygiene is essential when camping and walking, hence the hand wipe and napkin.
Evening meal

Once the tent is up I am having soup and crackers.
Chicken Chow Mein is a microwave meal from the supermarket. I am going to empty the contents of both packs into my Alpkit MiTiMug, heat, stir and eat. Instant custard for dessert.
Extras

There are tea bags and dried milk in the red neoprene pouch.
The two 60ml Nalgene bottles contain fresh ground coffee and dried milk. If fresh milk is available at the campsite I shall buy some.
Some of the mint chocolate is going to be broken up and added to the hot instant custard.
The breakfast biscuits are for having with my early morning tea whilst still in my sleeping bag.
Breakfast

I am going to mix the jam and dried fruit into the porridge – which can be made with either dried or fresh milk. The yogurt flakes I will eat with fresh coffee.
I am heading home after breakfast so no lunch.
Hayfield Camping and Caravan Club Site
Rather than go to the Lake District we decided to head for the Peak District and Hayfield.
It was raining when we put the tents up but a short, after dinner, walk to the Sportsman Inn solved that problem.
I had just finished eating my dinner, whilst sitting outside, when there were a few raindrops. By the time I had got my gear inside the tent and had the door closed it was hailing hard.
I had per-packed food this evening, Salmon Moroccan style, with crackers and custard for dessert.
with a mug of tea as well – of course
The food was very good and I will be using these John West lunches on future backpacking trips. They weigh more than noodles but on wild camping trips I will not need to carry any water to rehydrate the meal so saving weight there.

The weather looks spring like this weekend – so I have packed my bag and set off to camp at Woodhall Spa. It was not an early start so I got a lift to Bardney.
the starting point in Bardney
It is a cool day and promises to freeze tonight but I am depending on my new down sleeping bag and winter long underwear to keep me warm enough.
