Remote Working – My office today…

I have come away this weekend as Octagon has a number of weekend projects scheduled over the coming weeks; but I also have some presentations to work on. So for today this is my office.

Remote Working

Not only does remote working mean that our team can work from home, or client sites, or from the local wifi cafe. But especially for Diana and myself we can access our systems and information whilst we are away on holiday.

Read Octagon’s article about remote working which includes top tips and advice on how you can benefit from it.

On my agenda today:

  • Email and team scheduling using our secure hosted exchange
  • Collecting photos and other information for the presentations
  • Preparing the slides on my iPad using Microsoft PowerPoint connected to our OneDrive whilst writing my speaking notes using OneNote on my iPod
  • Phone meetings with both Kamila and Martin
  • A walk along the river into St Neots to find a good tea shop

Phone brackets and charging point in my MX-5

Whilst remote working to keep everything charged I have a USB charge plug in my MX-5 that supplies both 1A, for my phone and iPod and 2.1A for my iPad.

When the phone is in this bracket it is easy to use it as a personal hotspot so my wifi enabled devices can get on the Internet, this saves multiple SIM card costs.

Add to these my collection of tech gadgets, cables, brackets and chargers, a multi-coloured pen and a hard cover A5 notebook and I have everything with me to work away from home.

Tea – Remote Working – OneNote

Today’s photo is for an article Kamila is writing for Octagon about the way we are a company that fully embraces remote and home working.

The shot was not staged. I had stopped off in Octagon’s current favourite wifi cafe to write up some notes in Microsoft OneNote on my iPod Touch. Once synchronised other members of the Octagon team can quickly be using my notes.

Being able to work where ever I am is good for my time management. I can work on and share files in the cloud between meetings and appointments without wasting time travelling back to a fixed office.

Battery life

When working on the road, keeping things charged is always a priority. By using my iPod Touch it saves the battery life of my iPhone and iPad. The owners of this cafe have allowed me charge my phone whilst having lunch.

At Octagon we are helping our clients to take advantage of the benefits of home and remote working, saving money and creating a happy teams.

Podcasts

I am a great fan of podcasts stories and each week a I sync my favourites to my iPhone so I can listen to them whilst travelling between jobs. When walking I use my iPod, synced with the same podcasts and extra audiobooks.

I follow Tony Smith’s Sci-Fi podcast and this week for the third year in a row, his Starship Sofa has been nominated for a Hugo Award (a pretigous, international Sci-Fi award).

StarShipSofa No 233 Gwyneth Jones | StarShipSofa.

Amy H. Sturgis

This show is particularly good – it has an excellent article by Amy H. Sturgis about English author Samuel Youd, he wrote The Death of Grass and The Tripods. The show also includes the story “Vicar of Mars” by Gwyneth Jones – this is a story that includes aliens and spaceships, what else do you need!

I have listened to several other really good podcasts this week.

Journey Into…: Journey #29 – All At Once by Nathaniel Lee.

EP339 – “Run,” Bakri Says : Escape Pod.

Podcast

I synced my iPhone with iTunes, on my return last night, after three weeks I needed to back it up – but it also uploaded the latest podcasts.

Today was catch up day, at work, which meant driving to a number of clients to get jobs up and running for the coming weeks – that gave me time to listen to some of these podcasts. I listened to Escape Pod and was reminded by two stories why it is one of my favourite podcasts. So if you like good science fiction stories then check out the episodes; EP306 Radio Nowhere by Douglas Smith and EP305 Midnight Blue by Will McIntosh.

Documents To Go – iPhone

I have just discovered something really annoying about Documents To Go on my iPhone 4. I cannot copy and paste information from Safari into a DTG spreadsheet. I also tried copying the same list from a GoodReader text file into the spreadsheet and that did not work either. I’ll have to get someone in the office to create the spreadsheet and put it in the drop box – I can then get it from there using Documents To Go.

The office versions offered in DTG are cut down versions but they have nearly all the functionality I need – if you are going to use this software then get the slightly more expensive Premium version so you can link it to your online storage and you get support for PowerPoint.

I recommend this software to all our clients who want to use their iPhone or iPad for work (or other smartphone, my engineers use the Android version on their phones). My son has it on his iPod Touch for keeping up with his homework whilst away, without having to take a laptop. (He links to the internet via the personal hotspot on my iPhone when he is with me.)
