Do you like Science Fiction – then try the audio magazine StarShipSofa

StarShipSofa

The current show, StarShipSofa 308, is one of the best Tony Smith has every produced. It included a great sci-fi story with a talking cat, a fact article about Science Fiction Movie Soundtracks by David Raiklen and all through the show an in depth interview with Stanley Schmidt the former editor of Analog.

If the show had included the regular fact articles, Looking Back at Genre History by Amy H Sturgis and Science News by J J Campanella then it may have been getting near to perfect.

I download a lot of podcasts, and always have a backlog of staff to listen to, but when Tony publishes his show it goes to the top of the listening queue.

If you like science fiction then I really recommend this weekly podcast – try it and if you like it let Tony know.

SofaCON 2013: An Online International Science Fiction Convention

StarshipSofa – SofaCON 2013

I am a regular listener and subscriber to the StarshipSofa podcast, hosted by Tony Smith from his headquarters in North East England. This summer Tony organised a Sci-Fi convention, with a difference, it was online. I was unable to commit the time to buy a ticket, but Amy Sturgis, (a key contributor to both the Sofa and SofaCON) has posted a video on YouTube of some of the online events.

StarShipSofa

StarshipSofa is one of my favourite podcasts, as well as getting a professional standard narrated, world class story each week there are a variety of regular fact articles making it a true magazine podcast. Among my favourite contributions are Looking Back at SciFi History by Amy H Sturgis, who knows what she will tell us about next and Science News by Jim Campanella, where you can nearly guarantee he will tell us something obscure about the sex life of an insect!

I have promoted the video here – if you like what you see then go over and subscribe to the Sofa.

Story Title

C. C. Finlay

Lightspeed Magazine recently ran a story – with a title that makes me just want to read it, well in this case I listened to the podcast

The Cross-Time Accountants Fail To Kill Hitler Because Chuck Berry Does The Twist

written by C.C. Finlay (it is his photo at the start of this post).

Here is the link – The Cross-Time Accountants Fail To Kill Hitler Because Chuck Berry Does The Twist by C.C. Finlay | Lightspeed Magazine. It is worth reading, just to find out how Hitler, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Maybellene all come together in one short story. Or you can subscribe to the Lightspeed podcast.

Podcasts

I am a great fan of podcasts stories and each week a I sync my favourites to my iPhone so I can listen to them whilst travelling between jobs. When walking I use my iPod, synced with the same podcasts and extra audiobooks.

I follow Tony Smith’s Sci-Fi podcast and this week for the third year in a row, his Starship Sofa has been nominated for a Hugo Award (a pretigous, international Sci-Fi award).

StarShipSofa No 233 Gwyneth Jones | StarShipSofa.

Amy H. Sturgis

This show is particularly good – it has an excellent article by Amy H. Sturgis about English author Samuel Youd, he wrote The Death of Grass and The Tripods. The show also includes the story “Vicar of Mars” by Gwyneth Jones – this is a story that includes aliens and spaceships, what else do you need!

I have listened to several other really good podcasts this week.

Journey Into…: Journey #29 – All At Once by Nathaniel Lee.

EP339 – “Run,” Bakri Says : Escape Pod.

“Bring on the Rain” – StarShipSofa

Tony Smith has an excellent show this week – his “extra” story by Josh Roseman, “Bring on the Rain” is an old fashioned space opera story and is excellent. Add to this a fact article, Everything by Morgan Salette about spaceships and as every Tony’s podcast is a winner. Then we have the third part of the main fiction with floating cities on Venus!

You can find the podcast here – or subscribe and get great stories every week.
